Joseph Haydn
Symphony No. 102 (“Ninth London Symphony”)
Symphony No. 103 (“Drumroll Symphony”)
Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg
Ivor Bolton, conductor
Haydn composed the Symphony No. 102 at the turn of
the year 1794/95 during the course of his second trip
to London. It was the first symphony for the concert
series entitled “Opera Concerts”. The world premiere
took place on 2 February 1795 at the King’s Theatre
in London.
The Symphony No. 103, the “Drumroll Symphony”,
is probably better known and more popular. It
is Haydn’s penultimate symphony and also received
its first performance in 1795 at the King’s Theatre in
London.
Here, OehmsClassics presents a studio recording
made in May 2011 with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra
conducted by Ivor Bolton.
